Harry Ronald "Ron" Durham

Harry Ronald Durham, Sr., 82, of Asheboro, North Carolina, passed away in Dothan, Alabama on Thursday, June 29, 2023, surrounded by his children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Gilmer Durham, and Golden Marlene (Brower) Durham and his son, Ashley Brooks Durham.

Mr. Durham’s wish was for cremation. No services will be held at this time.

Ron was born on August 1, 1940 and raised in Asheboro, NC. His passion for playing sports started at an early age when he played basketball and baseball throughout his youth. He attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington on a baseball scholarship. Upon graduation, he played professional baseball in the minor leagues with the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, and the Philadelphia Phillies.  Throughout his career, he was educator and coached high school athletics. He continued his career in sporting goods sales. After retirement, his favorite past time was watching sports. Ron’s favorite teams to watch were the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, Atlanta Braves and Alabama Crimson Tide football.

He is survived by his four children, Ron Durham, Jr. (Sandra), Alisha Lewis (Wade), Beth Handal (Nelson), Stephen Durham; his only sister, Geraldine Durham Garner (the late David Chriscoe “Chigger”). He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 nephews, Davie Garner and Dennis Garner; and 5 great nieces.
